Islands of Massachusetts 2010, 2011
These pictures were made over the two-year period of 2010 and 2011. I began working aerially in the early 2000’s in making pictures of the wheat fields in SE Washington. This project began with an interest to see and photograph the small island off of Martha’s Vineyard called Noman’s Land. Used for bombing practice by the US Military in the post WW II years, it is now posted with no trespassing signs as it is forbidden to go there because there is unexploded ordinance on it. It seems somewhat ironic that it is now a bird preserve.
The pictures in the print portfolio are 21 x 14 inches and include Noman‘s Land, the Elizabeth Islands, Tuckernuck and Muskeget Islands off of Nantucket. The premise of the work is that these Massachusetts' islands are very close to major population centers, either on the mainland or near the very well known islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, but that they are largely unknown, and by most of us not visited. Some are private and some have no ferry service to them. Hence the series title, “Near But Far”.
